What does periodisation mean?

A
  • Dividing the training year into specific sections for a specific purpose
  • Elite performers need to programme their training carefully so that they improve performance and reduce the risk of injury
  • It comprimises 3 cycles: Macro cycyle, Meso cycle, Micro cycle

What is macro cycle and what happens during it?

A
  • Long term planning phase
  • Made up of three distinct periods
    …Preparation period: involves general conditioning and development of fitness
    …Competition period: where performer refines skills and techniques, while maintaining fitness levels
    …Transition period: rest and recovery stage - allows athlete o rechage physically and mentally and ensure an injury free start to the forthcoming season

What is meso cycle and what happens during it?

A
  • Usually a 4-12 week period of training with a particular focus
  • A sprinter would focus on power, reaction time and speed, whereas an endurance performer will focus more on strength endurance and cardiorespiratory endurance

What is micro cycyle and what happens during it?

  • Refers to planning for a week, a few days or an individual training session
  • It’s repeated throughout the length of the mesocycle
