Periodicity Flashcards
What is the s block of the periodic table
Group 1 & 2
What is the p block of the periodic table
Groups 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
What is the d block of the periodic table
Transition elements
What is the f block of the periodic table
The lanthanides and actinides
What controls which block an element is in
Its atomic number
How does atomic radius change along Period 3? Why?
It decreases along the period
More protons are being added to the nucleus so the increases change pulls electrons in closer to the nucleus
How does first ionisation energy change along Period 3? Why?
Generally increases along a period as the number of protons in the nucleus increases but the electrons enter the same main level so it gets harder to remove them
How does melting and boiling point change along Period 3? Why?
The metals all have high melting points. Silicons is very high due to its macromolecular structure but the rest of the non metals have very low Mps and Bps
Why is there a drop between first ionisation energy between groups 5 & 6
Phosphorous is 3p3 and Sulphur is 3p4
Therefore, once of sulphurs electrons is paired up and is therefore easier to remove due to repulsion
What is periodicity
Repeating trends along a period
