Equilibria Flashcards
What does equilibria indicate
How far a reaction will go
What is Le Chateliers principle used for
Used to predict the effects of changes in temperature, pressure and concentration on the position of equilibrium in homogeneous reactions (all same state).
What does Kc indicate
How an equilibrium yield will be influenced by the concentration of reactants and products.
What is true of an equilibrium reaction
Forward and reverse reactions happen at equal rates
The concentrations of reactants and products are constant
What does Le Chateliers principle state
If a system at equilibrium is disturbed, the equilibrium moves in the direction that tends to reduce the disturbance.
How does a catalyst effect the equilibrium position
It doesnt
Why may a compromise of temperature and pressure be used
Yield may be better at lower temps however rate of reaction will be greater at higher temps
How can you get Kc from an equation
Products/
Reactants
If there are 2 moles of something, it should be squared etc
What is conc. measured in
mol dm-3
What is an equilibrium constant affected by
Just temperature
Not conc. or catalyst
How will increasing the temperature of an exothermic reaction change Kc
It will decrease
How will decreasing the temperature of an exothermic reaction change Kc
It will increase
How will increasing the temperature of an endothermic reaction change Kc
It will increase
How will decreasing the temperature of an endothermic reaction change Kc
It will decrease
