Alkenes Flashcards
What is an Alkene
Unsaturated hydrocarbons with a C=C double bond
Alkene General Formula
CnH2n
Alkenes Reactivity?
High electron density of the double bond means it can do electrophilic addition
Alkene intermolecular forces
Only VDW forces
Alkene Solubility?
No due to non polar bonds
What is an electrophile?
Electron deficient ions which accept a pair of electrons
Most stable Carbocation
Alkyl groups have a positive inductive effect so the most stable carbocation has the most C’s surrounding
This is because alkyl groups push electrons onto the carbocation making it more stable
Addition Polymer
Many monomers bound together without the loss of any atom
What are plasticisers?
Small molecules that get between polymer chains force them apart allowing them to slide over each other
Uses of PVC
Drainpipes
Vinyl
Aprons
How does PVC change with a plasticiser
Becomes more flexible
Do addition polymers break easily, Why/why not?
No as bonds are non-polar so aren’t attacked by enzymes
Strong C-C Bond which can’t be hydrolysed
What is mechanical recycling
Plastics are separated into different types, washed, ground down, melted and re-moulded
What is feedstock recycling
Plastics heated to a temperature which break polymer bonds leading original monomers that can be made into new plastics (can only be done so many times)
Explain how this type of stereoisomerism arises.
