Period 5 Ch 15 Flashcards
Radical Republicans
Sought political and civil rights for emancipated African Americans and punishment of the South.
Emancipation
to free from restraint, control, or the power of another. Unlike Radical Republicans, Lincoln thought South should be restored to the Union quickly and leniently since he offered full pardons to anyone taking a loyalty oath to the Union and accepting emancipation
The Thirteenth Amendment
It abolished slavery because under the Emancipation Proclamation, slavery was still legal in many places and it won ratification because 8 southern states reconstructed under Lincoln’s plan approved its adoption.
Andrew Johnson
He believed in state’s rights and rejected Radical ideas about a strong federal government and gave amnesty to most former Confederates who took loyalty oath and accepted emancipation.
Reconstruction
the effort to reintegrate Southern states from the Confederacy and 4 million newly-freed people into the United States.
Freedman’s Bureau
provide food, shelter, clothing, medical services, and land to displaced Southerners, including newly freed African Americans. He also extended support to help establish the schools, and other institutions including benevolent societies and newspapers.
Black Codes
It represented an effort to control black farm labor and relegate blacks to a subordinate position.
Ku Klux Klan
Created for this purpose, as well as to undermine the Republican party in the South and many African American were killed during riots in Memphis and New Orleans
Sharecropping
An agricultural system that emerged after the Civil War in which black and white farmers rented land and residences from a plantation owner in exchange for giving him a certain “share” of each year’s crop.
Emancipation
Declared all slaves in rebelling states to be free but did not affect slavery in non-rebelling Border States
Suffrage
The right to vote in Political elections. A vote is given in favor of a proposed measure or candidate. The leaders objected to the inclusion of the word malein connection with voting. This was because of the topic of blacks voting.
Fourteenth Amendment
The constitutional amendment extended civil rights to freedmen and prohibited states from taking away such rights without due process. This was part of the Military Reconstruction Act of 1867 when they ratified this amendment and approved black suffrage.
Impeachment
Johnson faced impeachment because he challenged Congress over the Tenture of Office Act by firing Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, the House of Representatives voted to impeach him and at trial in the Senate, removed only one vote short of the required two-thirds majority.
Fifteenth Amendment
Prohibited denying the right to vote on basis of the race since many northern states had not yet enfranchised African Americans, as all reconstructed southern states were required to do.
Civil Rights Act of 1875
It was the last congressional Reconstruction measure since it prohibited racial discrimination in jury selection, transportation, and public facilities (except in schools, churches, and cemeteries).
