Wilmot Proviso
Many in the US protested against the war since concern arose from the connection between expansion and slavery. The annexation of Texas focused intense attention on slavery since southerner saw greater economic and congressional power in the expansion of slavery, Northerners found slavery’s expansion into Texas proof that there was a “Slave Power” conspiracy, and appropriations for the war effort were held up by the debate over proposed Wilmot Proviso.
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
In California, American settlers revolted against Mexico since they established the Bear Flag Republic. Polk sent the army to Santa Fe which seized the entire region without opposition. In Mexico, Mexicans were defeated on several fronts since Taylor defeated Santa Anna at Buena Vista and Scott marched overland and seized Mexico City. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war and the US obtained Texas’s border at Rio Grande, all of NM and CA and Mexico received $15 million and US payment for war damages caused by Mexico in Texas.
Free-Soil party
The Free-Soil party insisted that slavery must be excluded from the territories.
The Compromise of 1850
It sought to resolve all issues such as Popular sovereignty and the Fugitive-slave law

They are catching free blacks and it is always challenging and placate southerners and

Know-nothings
The Know-Nothings proposed ending poor relief to non-citizens, creating literacy tests before people could vote, banning foreigners from holding public office, and extending the residency requirement to 21 years before an immigrant could become a citizen.
Underground Railroad
Differences over slavery further split the Whigs since publication of Uncle Tom’s Cabin gave new impetus to antislavery sentiment and some northerners began to assist slaves to escape via the Underground Railroad.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
Repealed the Missouri Compromise, created two new territories, and allowed for popular sovereignty.
