period 3 Flashcards
Which (Mg or Na) reacts more vigorously with water and why?
Na as it requires less energy to loose and electron
What is the structure of Na2O, MgO and Al2O3?
Giant ionic lattice so has a high melting point
What is the structure of SiO2?
Macro-molecular
What is the structure of P4O10 and SO2?
Simple Molecular
Why does Al2O3 have a lower MP than MgO?
As the 3+ distorts the electron cloud pulling electrons away from O so it has covalent character.
Why does MgO have the highest MP out of the ionic lattices?
As it is a +2 ion so there is a stronger attraction
Why does Na2O have a higher pH than MgO when dissolved?
as it is more soluble
What acid does SO2 form when dissolved in water?
H2SO3 / Sulfurous acid
What is SiO2 in terms of acid-base?
Acid as it forms salt when reacted with a base
What is Al2O3 in terms of acid-base?
Amphoteric
Rank the period 3 oxides in terms of MP &BP(H to L)?
MgO
Al2O3
Na2O
SiO2
P4O10
SO2
What is the reaction between NaOH & SiO2?
2NaOH + SiO2 ->Na2SiO3 + H2O
What is the reaction between NaOH & P4O10?
12NaOH + P4O10 -> 4Na3PO4 + 6H2O
