Pericardium/heart layers Flashcards
Understanding its layers and function
1
Q
what are the 3 pericardial layers the heart sits in and there location?
A
Fibrous pericardium- tough outer covering that attaches the heart to the diaphragm. It protects and anchors the heart from over stretching. Serous pericardium (2 layers) - the parietal layer (outer layer) and visceral layer (internal layer) aka Epicardium. The space in between the serous pericardium is the pericardial cavity that contains pericardial fluid.
2
Q
what is pericardial fluid?
A
serous fluid produced allows the heart to beat in a relatively friction less state.
3
Q
what are the 3 layers of the epicardium?
A
epicardium- ( same as the visceral pericardium)
myocardium - thickest layer of the heart. located in the middle and contains Cardiac Muscle Tissue.
endocardium-innermost layer of the heart. Has “simple squamous epithelium”. aka Endothelium and it continues with enetering and exiting blood vessels.
4
Q
what are 4 cardiac muscle tissue characteristics?
A
is striated, involuntary, contains intercalated discs, and usually uni-nucleated.
