Pathology of the Heart Flashcards
Diseases of the heart
What is Myocardial ischemia?
its a lack of blood to the cardiac tissue, that results in low oxygen (hypoxia) and the cardiac cell weakens in the process.
What is angina?
Chest pain
what is the meaning of angina pectoris?
is chest pain that comes with Ischemia
Define MI (myocardial infraction)
A heart attack is when cardiac cells die and the heart weakens because of scar tissue and makes the heart more difficult to contract.
Define coronary artery disease (CAD)
Plaques that cause Ischemia and MI’s
What is Arteriosclerosis? and Atherosclerosis?
Arteriosclerosis is a hardening, thickening and weakening of the hearts arteries in general and Atherosclerosis is a cause of arteriosclerosis by the formation of plaques.
What are plaques?
lesions and deposits on the arteries.
what is the diffrence between a (CABG) coronary artery bypass graft and (PTCA) percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty?
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)- is when a new blood vessel is spliced in to go around the blockage and Precutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA)- is when they insert a catheter that inflates and squashes the plaque, to prevent more blockage from forming. some times they wire a mesh tube too to keep the plaque from blockage.
