Septic Pericarditis, most common from ‘hardware’ disease. (Ingesting nails that penetrate through the reticulum and go into pericardial sac)

What clinical signs/physical exam signs would you expect from Septic/Traumatic Pericarditis?

A

Pyrexia, Fever, depression, anorexia, positive “pinch test” which shows pain, may have RSHF, venous congestion. PE: Muffled heart sounds, tachycardia, weak pulses.

How do you diagnose/treat Septic Pericarditis in Cattle?

A

“Pinch” test or bar test. May use radiography or US but rare. Most are culled, however, can be removed surgically. Magnets can be used to prevent.

What virus can cause neoplastic pericarditis in LA?What clinical signs/physical exam signs would you expect from Neoplastic Pericarditis?

A

V. uncommon in LA. Can get Bovine Leukaemia Virus. You can get lymphoma masses on RA or pericardium. CS: Pericardial effusion, RSHF, mass in pericardium, jugular distension.

A

Lameness, swollen joints, fever, depression, effusions in CNS/pleura/peritoneum.

How can Idiopathic Pericarditis in horses be diagnosed? How is it treated? What is the prognosis?

A

Diagnosed via. echo, ECG (small complexes), or cytology. Treated with repeated pericardial drainage and lavage. Prognosis good with early and aggressive treatment.
