What is S1? Where is it best heard?
Onset of systole on closure of the mitral and tricuspid valves. Loudest heart sound. Heard best at left apex.
What is S2? Where is it best heard?
End of systole on closure of aortic and pulmonic valves. Heard best at left heart base.
What is S3? Should you hear it in small animals?
Passive ventricular filling, blood flows from atria to ventricles. SHOULD NOT BE HEARD IN SA or it’s a gallop rhythm.
What is S4? Should you hear it in small animals?
Active ventricular filling as atria contract. SHOULD NOT BE HEARD IN SA or it’s a gallop rhythm.
What normal heart sounds would you expect to hear in the cat and dog?
S1 and S2.
What normal heart sounds would you expect to hear in the horse?
S1, S2, S4.
Where is sysole in relation to heart sounds?
Between S1 and S2.
Where is diastole in relation to heart sounds?
Between S2 and S1.
What is a gallop rhythm?
Additional heart sounds heard e.g. S3/S4 in small animals.
