Perfusion Part 4 - Thrombi Flashcards
1
Q
What are 5 risk factors for developing thrombi?
A
- Blood stasis (ex: bedrest, decreased mobility post-surgery).
- High estrogen (ex: during pregnancy, patients taking birth control).
- Smoking.
- Blood clotting disorders (ex: hypercoaguability due to genetic disease, endogenous control failures, antithrombin III deficiency)
- Surgery: injury to the vessel or embolus from another area (ex: orthopaedic surgery)
2
Q
What life-threatening situation can be caused by DVT?
A
Pulmonary embolism: embolus dislodges from legs and moves up to lungs.
3
Q
What are 4 signs & symptoms of pulmonary embolism?
A
- SoB
- Low O2 sat relative to normal range.
- Compensatory mechanisms
- Chest pain
4
Q
How do we diagnose pulmonary embolisms?
A
CT scans.
5
Q
How can we prevent pulmonary embolisms? (3 ways)
A
- Early mobilization post surgery.
- Compression stockings.
- Anticoagulation pre/during/post surgery (heparins & LMWHs)
6
Q
How do we treat pulmonary embolisms in an ER situation?
A
Thrombolytics.
