A method of evaluating performance in which employees are judged off predetermined behaviors that are derived from how a successful employee would act in their position.

Forced ranking
A method for capturing evaluation ratings in which employees are assigned a numerical score that typically aligns to categories such as “meets expectations” or “exceeds expectations.”
Numerical scale
Process of maintaining or improving job performance through ongoing communication between a supervisor and an employee in support of accomplishing the strategic goals of the organization.
Performance management
The ratings assigned to an employee as part of the evaluation process and that are typically documented in human resource management systems.
Performance ratings
A method of addressing an employee’s conduct or performance issues through a series of gradual steps for corrective action.

A type of goal that can be used as part of performance appraisals. The acronym “SIM” stands for: specific, important, and measurable.
