PERCEPTION- Issues with direct realism:time lag. Response Flashcards

1
Q

what does the direct realist argue about C1 of the time lag argument

A

Doesnt imply C2.
There is nothing in the direct realists view that commits it to the claim that the moment of which we perceive an object must be simultaneous with the object perceived.
Time lag doesnt mean that we are seeing objects indirectly we are just seeing them as they were

Q

what is the appeal of the time lag argument

A

draws attention to the physical processes that must occur for us to be aware of objects
also recognises that there are physiological processes that take place in our brains before we become aware of the objects around us that take time

Q

However what are these appeals not

A

sense data
its not mediating and none of this implies we are directly aware of sense data or that we must use sense data to infer the existence of objects
we say that once we become aware of an object we are aware of the object itself
