PERCEPTION- indirect realism basics Flashcards
what type of theory is indirect realism
a realist theory - objects still exist outside our minds
it draws a distinction between the reality of these objects and the way that they appear
What are the three elements in perception
the perceiver, the real objects they perceive and the appearance of the object that they perceive
what are the representations of reality
what we are directly aware of, the appearances that Locke termed “ideas” and Russell termed “sense data”
what must we do on the basis of sense data
the nature of reality as perception involves inference as it is indirect
What supports indirect realism
the arguments of illusion, perceptual variation, time lag and hallucination as what we directly perceive isnt always an accurate representation of reality
