Are The Conditions Of The JTB Jointly Sufficent Flashcards
What were Gettier counter examples
Cases of lucky true belief
What was the job gettier counter example
Smith and Jones are going for the same job. Smith had strong evidence that his rival hones will get the job. Smith also has strong evidence that Jones has ten coins in his pocket. Smith forms the belief that the man who will get the job has ten coins in his pocket. As it turns out, smith gets the job. Also, by coincidence, smith has exactly ten coins in his pocket. So smiths belief that the man who will get the job has ten coins in his pocket was a) a belief, b) true, c) justified
What would most claim about the job
That smith didn’t have knowledge as luck was involved. This shows we have an anti-luck intuition as we don’t want to award knowledge on the basis of luck
What was the scenario about brown in Barcelona
Smith has strong evidence that his friend jones owns a ford. Smiths believes that jones owns a ford. Smith have any evidence of his friend browns whereabouts, but on the strength of his first belief he forms a new disjunctive belief that jones owns a ford OR Brown is in Barcelona(chosen at random). This new belief is justified as smith has no reason to doubt the first part.
However it turns out that jones no longer has a ford and brown is in Barcelona.
His belief of either jones owns a ford OR brown is in Barcelona is luckily true but we wouldn’t say he has knowledge as luck was involved
What is a disjunctive belief
Joining two different beliefs together
What does zagzebski argue about the JTB
The JTB will always leave a gap between justification and the truth so we will always be able to generate gettier-style examples that rely on double luck
What is double luck
The justification being unluckily wrong but the belief being luckily true
What is the virus X/Y scenario
A doctor believes that a patient has virus x. The tests show that this is the only virus consistent with the evidence(strong inductive evidence)
However the symptoms are actually caused by a new virus,Y( she is unlucky in her prior justification)
But it turns out the patient has virus x too but in a stage too early to show up on the tests (her belief is luckily true)
What zagzebski claim the only way to avoid gettier-style cases
Linking the justification to the truth of the belief. Only when true beliefs are held because of the justification should we claim knowledge
What is the fake barns scenario
Barney is driving, unknowingly, through fake-barn county(lots of fake barns have been built). Barney looks to the side and sees a big red barn. On the basis of this he believes that he has seen a big red barn by the road. However this happens to be the only real red barn in the area
How do the fake barn cases criticise the JTB
Shows how the justification can not be false in any way but the believer does not know that she is in an unusual context which makes her belief seem luckily true
Do the scenarios suggest that the JTB is sufficient for knowledge
No as the scenarios don’t count as knowledge
Do the scenarios suggest that the JTB is sufficient for knowledge
