Q

Explain why the second premise allows misinterpretation

A

A direct realist could argue:
When I’m subject to an illusion it’s not the case that I’m directly aware of anything distinct from the physical object.
There is no thing(the appearance of the straw) of which I’m immediately aware and which we can contrast with the real straw
I’m directly aware of the real straw but it appears bent due to circumstances(light travelling through two different mediums)

Q

What don’t direct realists have to suppose

A

That all objects have to appear exactly as they are. We can accept that an object may appear differently because of the way they appear to the perceiver not because of sense data

Q

What is the indirect realists mistake here

A

To ‘reify appearances’- to suppose that we must explain illusions by positing the existence of appearance and sense data which are directly observed
