PERCEPTION- Direct Realism Issues : Hallucination Flashcards
What is an hallucination
When a person perceives something that isn’t actually there and it can be difficult to distinguish this from your veridical (real) perception
What does hallucinations and veridical perception being subjectively indistinguishable mean
The person must be aware of the same thing in both cases as what a person is aware of when having a hallucination is in your mind, what they are aware of during veridic perception must also be in the mind
What do we directly perceive during hallucinations
Sense data in the mind and perceive the material world indirectly
How can the argument be summarised as
P1) hallucinations occur when a person perceives something that doesn’t exist outside the mind
C1) so what they perceive, the hallucination, exists only in there mind
P2) hallucinations can be subjectively indistinguishable from veridical perceptions
P3) but if hallucinations and veridical perceptions are subjectively indistinguishable the person must be aware of the same thing in both cases
C2) so from c1, p2, p3, what they are directly aware of during veridical perception must also be in the mind
C3) hence why we perceive the world indirectly and direct realism is false
