PERCEPTION- Issues With Direct Realism: Perceptual Variation . Response Flashcards
How can a direct realist give up the notion that we perceive the properties of objects without giving up the idea of direct realism
Direct realism can accept that objects may appear differently to the perceivers and yet still insist that they are being directly perceived
What is an example that can prove that direct realism can be different depending on the perceiver
Water that is lukewarm can appear cold to a perceiver however it doesn’t mean it isn’t lukewarm or being directly perceived. It also doesn’t mean that there must be something , the appearance of cold, which is directly perceived and distinct from the water itself.
It’s a property of lukewarm water that it will appear warm to a cold hand and cold to a warm hand or a table can appear white while being brown
How can we prove what the real property is
There is agreed methods in finding out the temperature of the water and the true colour of the table.
Of there is disagreement we can issue that the lighting conditions are normal and move around the table to avoid glare to enable us to find out it’s real colour
What else can we explain about the table and water
The colour appears a certain way due to different angles in terms of the way the light reflects from its surface. We can also explain why the water is hot or cold as it’s due to the temperature of our hands relative to that of the water
What do these examples tell us
There is no need to question the existence of a third thing, the appearance, mediating between the perceiver and perceived
