perceptia prima Flashcards
What is perception?
A way to make sense of the world.
What do illusions tell us about perception?
Illusions tell us where the system doesn’t work the way you might expect it and that tells you something about the make up of the system.
What is a sensation?
The simple awareness by the stimulation of a sense organ. The organs pick up external energy from the world.
What is psychophysics?
Scientific investigation of what we can objectively perceive - what are the thresholds of our perception.
There are minimum requirements for your system to pick up something.
The level of stimulus intensity where we can perceive it 50% of the time.
What is JND?
Just noticeable difference: the threshold where we can just barely perceive a change in a stimulus.
What is signal detection?
How good are we at picking up sensory inputs.
What is the occipital cortex responsible for?
Visioin.
What are the 2 types of receptor cells that pick up light?
- Cones: present in the fovea. good at colour vision and detail
- Rodes: peripheral vision. dim light, motion. used at night in the dark
What is retinopy?
Retinal cells are mapped to points on visual cortex.
What is area V1?
Primary visual cortex - pattern recognition, movement
What is area V2?
Secondary visual cortex - contours, figure or ground
What is area V3 and V4?
Form, colour, motion and shape
What is area v5?
Highly specialised cells for movement.
What is the ventral stream concerned with?
Form and colour processing and object.
What is the dorsal stream concerned with?
Location and movement processing.
