Memoria pe termen lung 1 Flashcards
What is semantic memory?
It is a type of explicit (declarative) long term memory. It is our knowledge about the world.
What is episodic memory?
It is a type of explicit (declarative) long term memory. It contains information about experiences and events that make up someone’s life.
Which one of the following is tied to spatial or temporal events: semantic memory or episodic memory?
Episodic memory is tied to spatial or temporal events
How is semantic memory organised in LTM?
Semantic memory is organised and represented efficiently in LTM according to CATEGORIES and CONCEPTS.
How do categories aid memory?
Categories allow us to group information. They decrease the amount of information we need to learn, perceive, remember and recognise.
What is the theory of organisation of information? (Collins and Quillian)
This is a theory about how semantic information is organised in the LTM.
Items in semantic memory are organised hierarchically.
We organised information hierarchically.
Facts are the top of the hierarchy are not repeated below.
We groups items of knowledge rather than storing them individually because of cognitive economy.
What is cognitive economy?
It aims to provide maximum information with minimum cognitive effort.
Evidence that semantic memory is organised into categories and hierarchically?
Patient JL had progressive semantic dementia.
He was able to recognise a bird but over the years bird turned into an animal which is higher up the hierarchy suggesting that knowledge is categorised into categories.
Tell me about episodic memory.
It was introduced by Tulving.
It contains information about experiences.
It has autonoetic properties.
What are autonoetic properties?
It is a conscious awareness and subjective experience that accompanies the information retrieved.
What is the evidence that semantic and episodic memory are different stores?
Amnesia patients often have intact semantic memory but impaired episodic memory.
Semantic dementia patients often have intact episodic memory but impaired semantic memory.
There is a double dissociation btwn amnesic patients and patients with semantic dementia.
