What is memory?
The mental functions of retaining information about stimuli, events, images, ideas after they are no longer present.
What is retrograde amnesia?
The inability to recall past memories.
What is anterograde amensia?
The inability to create new memories.
What is the primacy and recency effect?
When ppt recall a list of words they remember the 1st and last word.
The primacy effect occurs bc early words are rehearsed more and enter LTM.
The recency effect occurs because later words are still in the STM.
What is the levels of processing theory? (Craik & Lockhart)
We soon forget what we have not deeply thought about.
Levels of processing refers to the depth of encoding.
Deeply encoding enhances retrieval.
What aids retrieval?
Depth of processing AND encoding specificity. principle.
What is encoding specificity principle? (Tulving)
The probability of retrieval depends on how closely the context at retrieval matches the context at encoding.
What are the 2 types of context?
Extrinsic context: physical surroundings or conditions
Intrinsic context: meaning attached to the item
What is mental reinstatement of the context?
Drawing upon the encoding specificity principle of memory by aiming to facilitate the feature overlap between the event and retrieval environment.
