What is cognitive pyshcology?
The study of mental processes needed for every day life
What is neuropsychology?
The study of how brain structure and processes mediate behaviour
What is localisation of function?
The attempt to identify specific areas of the brain that are involved in certain processes.
What are CAT and MRI used for?
To assess physical damage to the brain
What are PET and fMRI used for?
Detecting physiological abnormalities
What does impaired visual recognition lead to?
Visual agnosia
What does impaired face recognition lead to?
Prosopagnosia
What is prosopagnosia?
Face blindness
Caused by brain damage in adulthood - acquired prosopagnosia
Some people have it from childhood without any know brain damage - developmental prosopagnosia
What are super-recognisers?
Remarkable facial recognition often many years after first meeting someone.
What does impaired memory lead to?
Amnesia
Why do we study damaged brains?
Allows clinicians and researchers to understand a patient’s impaired and intact abilities
