-helicobactor pylori (H. pylori)
-long term use of NSAIDs
-stress
S&S
-Burning sensation between meal/night
-Pain stop if eat/take antacids
-pain comes and goes
-bloating
Lab
-Urea breathing test (non invasive)
-Biopsy of stomach lining (EGD, CBC, stool - for blood)
meds
-#1 PPI pantoprazole (suppresses secretion of gastric acid)
-sucralfate - protective barrier against acid (anti ulcer)
-ondansetron
-metronidazole (antibiotic)
Things to remember with PPI - pantoprazole
-Don’t crush
-can’t be on it forever because it’s powerful
Things to remember with sucralfate
-coats stomach
-must take 4x day (1 hour before meals, night)
What is ondansetron for?
Nausea
Things to remember with flagyl - metronidazole
No alcohol or sex
Complications
Hemorrhage
Perforation
Gastric outlet obstruction
What is a hemorrhage
Bleed
What is a perforation?
Hole in stomach, food spilling out
What is a gastric outlet obstruction?
Blockage, inflammation, food cannot leave stomach

-NPO first
-IV fluids
-teach things to remember with meds
-no smoking
