Risk factors of diverticulitis
Constipation, lack of dietary fiber, obesity, smoking, inactivity
S/S of diverticulitis
-guarding, hard belly
-elevated WBC
-electrolytes may be altered
-vomiting
-fever
Acute diverticulitis - what to do
Let the colon rest and decrease inflammation
For acute diverticulitis, does patient have to go to hospital ? How is it managed?
No, can be managed at home. Clear liquid, bed rest , analgesic / antibiotics
Meds for diverticulitis
Antibiotics , ondansetron for nausea, pain meds, IV fluids
Complications of diverticulitis
-peritonitis
-abcess
-perforation
What is peritonitis?
Inflammation of the peritoneum
What will a perforation require?
Procedure that involves resection in involved colon with primary anastomosis
Interventions / teaching if admitted to hospital with diverticulitis
-NG tube
-NPO
-check electrolytes
-look for infection
-liquids
-activity
-colostomy, normally 6 mo, then will have a reversal
