Penis Flashcards
Function
Enclose and support the urethra, in doung so it contributes to urinary and reproductive function.
Composition
Composed of three sections - the root, the body and the glans.
The root
Lies in the pelvic floor and is comprised of the left and right crura which gives rise to the corpora carvernosa on the dorsal part of the external penis. On the third central bulb of the penis which gives rise to the corpus spongiosum on the ventral part of the penis externally. This eventually gives rise to the glans penis which forms the distal tip of the organ.
Shaft
Longest overall part of the penis. Makes up most of the externally visible organ.
The glans
The distal tip which has an enlarged circumference compared to the shaft. It is has a loose layer of retractable skin called the prepuce and terminates at the external urethral orifice. This is where urine is voided from or semen is ejaculated from.
Tunica albuginea
Outer connective tissue capsule which encloses each individual cylindrical section. As the corpora cavernosa has a rich blood supply, during sexual arousal the void or sinuses in this tissue will fill with blood from dilated vessels. this engorgement of blood puts pressure on the draining veins and makes the penis larger and stiffer, allowing insertion of the penis into the female vagina and delivery of semen into the female reproductive tract.
Corpus spongiosum
The part that directly enclosed the majority of the urethra.
Pudendal nerve
Innervates the penis and perineum together. This nerve runs close to the prostate, seminal vesicles and urinary bladder.
