Location
Thoracic cavity. Anterior aspect of the neck. Extends from the fourth to sixth vertebral levels. Anterior to the inferior portion of the pharynx.
Size, Shape, Appearance
Triangle-shaped consisting of many pieces of cartilage attached to one another by muscles or fibrous, elastic tissue components. It is lined. by ciliated columnar epithelium. Most superior part, epiglottis, is a flap that covers the opening and allows air into the larynx, trachea, and lungs but prevents food and drink from entering the trachea.
Relations
Inf = Trachea Sup = Pharynx Ant = Neck wall Post = Oesophagus
Blood Supply and Drainage
Supply - superior and inferior laryngeal arteries.
Drainage - Inferior, middle and superior thyroid veins.
Lymphatic Drainage
It is drained into the deep cervical lymph nodes.
