Location
Paired structure in female pelvic cavity. About the level of the pelvic brim. Some freedom of movement but lie in area of L5 and S1.
Size, Shape, Appearance
Ovoid shaped. Gray in colour, have uneven outer surface covered in layer of peritoneum. 3-5cm on longest axis. Each has hilum where blood and lymph vessels enter and leave. There are 2 ligaments that loosely hold them in place. Ovarian ligament that holds it to wall of uterus. Suspensory ligament joins it to pelvic wall. Both serve to hold ovaries in close proximity to fallopian tube opening.
Relations
Ant = small intestine Post = caecum on right and sigmoid on left Sup = fallopian tubes Inf = bladder Med = uterus Lat = pelvic bones
Blood Supply and Drainage
Left and right arteries and veins
Lymphatic Drainage
Via para aortic chains and can be to some common iliac chains.
