pelvis trauma Flashcards
MOI of pelvis fracture
AP compression (open book)
vertical shear
stability test of pelvis fracture
Medial “closing” at level of iliac crests -Alternate pelvic rolling
Perform tests just once not to cause any further injury.
Pelvic stability verified during ATLS assessment
( “C” Circulation) Careful not to cause more internal bleeding.
if pelvis fracture is suspected what should you do
Maintain manual stabilization until mechanical binder applied
pelvis binder is place where
over greater trochanter
can you use a pelvic binder even if you are in doubt of a fracture
yes
what do you need to keep together with pelvic binder
knee and ankle
Purpose of Pelvic Binder:
Does very little to reduce volume or create a pelvic tamponade because of the lack of vertical confinement for the retroperitoneal hematoma.
❑ Acts more like a « pelvic splint » to stabilize and minimize any disturbance for the formation of a hematoma / clot.
❑ Helps with patient comfort by reducing tension on the vessels and nerves
what is the sheet method
Maintain manual stabilization
Pass sheet under lumbar hollow or under knees
Slide under to level of greater trochanter
Tie double knot in sheet, pass small stick in knot and twist for windlass effect
