Pelvis and hip joint Flashcards
Female pelvis
pelvic inlet circular
broader alae
pubic arch angle larger
ischial spines project less medially
Male pelvis
heart shaped pelvic inlet
smaller pelvic angles
ischial spines project more medially
What stabilises the hip joint?
acetabular anatomy
fibrous capsule
Ligaments - iliofemoral, pubofemoral, ischiofemoral
What shape is the articular surface of the acetabulum?
smooth and crescent shape
what is the acetabular labrum?
a rim/ lip of cartilage
which deepens the articular surface
What are the attachments of the fibrous capsule?
proximal - encircles rim of acetabulum
distal - femoral neck (intertrochanteric line and greater trochanter)
What does the iliofemoral ligament do?
Covers hip joint superiorly and anteriorly
prevents hyperextension of the hip when standing
what does the pubofemoral ligment do?
covers hip joint inferiorly and anteriorly
prevents excessive abduction
what does the ischiofemoral ligament do?
covers posteriorly
Which ligament is the strongest
iliofemoral
which ligament is the weakest
ischiofemoral
Pubic rami fracture
common
break in two places
What is the appearance of a posteriorly dislocated hip
shortened and internally rotated
How does a posterior dislocation occur?
impact when hip is flexed, internally rotated, adducted = seated position
What may also result from a posterior hip dislocation
sciatic nerve injury (L4-S3)
acetabular fracture
What is the appearance of the leg with an anterior dislocation?
externally rotated, abducted and flexed
What is a common problem with hip injuries?
avascular necrosis
What is DDH
developmental dysplasia of the hip
What are the possible movements at the hip?
flexion extension abduction adduction external and internal rotation
gluteus maximus origin
posterior ilium, sacrum and coccyx
gluteus maximus insertion
iliotibial tract and gluteal tuberosity
gluteus maximus innervation
inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2)
gluteus medius origin
posterior ilium
gluteus medius insertion
lateral surface of greater trochanter
