peds: growth & development Flashcards
gestational age def full term post term pre term min age of viability
gestation age = time spent in utero full term = 38-40 weeks post term = 40wks + preterm = <37 weeks minimum viable age =23-24 wks
chart terminology for a womans past pregnancy hx

APGAR
what it is and 2 ranges we need to know
low scores are associated with… (3)
newborn assesment tool
8-9 very good condition (10 is perfect but never happens)
0-3 means baby was resuscitated
low scores can be from
- meds given to mother
- prematurity*
- rapid delivery
Nuerologic complications of prematurity (3)
gestational age
at 28-32 weeks
- intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) => CP
- periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) => CP
- seizures
respiratory complications of prematurity (3)
- respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)
- bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)
- apnea
* not associated with SIDS
RDS
what it is
3 tx options
respiratory distress syndrome
surfactant deficit
tx
surfactant replacement
O2
mechanical vent
BPD what is it who's at risk tx later complications (2)
bronchopulmonary dysplasia
walls of lungs thicken making O2/CO2 exchange difficult
who is at risk?
> 10 wks premature
less than 1kg at birth
tx
supplemental O2 or vent
later consequences
limited physical activity tolerance => developmental delays
chronic upper respiratory or lung problems
CV complications associated with prematurity (2)
- patent ductus arteriosus (heart murmer)
2. bradycardia
Renal complications associated with prematurity (2)
and their tx
- necrotizing enterocolitis (small intestine wall necrosis)
tx= breast feeding - jaundice (hyperbilirubinemia) (can lead to brain damage)
tx = photo therapy
sensory deficits associated with prematurity (2)
- retinopathy of prematurity
because retinal vascularization isn’t complete until near term
high risk born before 35 wks - hearing impairment
