ABCDE
Airway (can they pass air to cry or talk)
Breathing (are they apneic, respirations labored, accessory muscles used)
Circulation (alert and pink)
Disability (LOC, AVPU)
Exposure (Detailed head to toe exam)
What are signs of wellness?
- No caregiver concerns about level of activity
- No changes in breathing patterns
- No changes in intake or output
- Alert, interactive
How to correct the ABC’s?
Airway obstruction: position them differently, suction;
Breathing issue: stimulate and assist with bag-mask ventilation and/or intubation
Circulation: give fluid and maybe epi!!
What are most pediatric arrests? Adults?
Respiratory (respiratory distress leading to fatigue and failure); cardiac
What does lethargic mean? Irritable?
NOT TIRED; means abnormally drowsy and unable to appropriately interact with their environment; means INCONSOLABLE (meningeal irritation, intracranial hemorrhage)
Heart rate of newborn to 3 months, 3 to 2 years, 2 years to 10 years, > 10 years? RR for <12 mos, 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5-12, and 13-19?
80-205, 75-190, 60-140, 50-100;
30-60, 24-40, 22-34, 18-30, 12-16
Neonatal ____ is an emergency; why?
fever; limited ability to cope with infection
A kid falls and won’t use his arm after a fall, what could he have?
BUCKLE FRACTURE, and most likely no tenderness in his arm!!
What are two signs of siginficant illness that should be evaluated thoroughly?
- Tachycardia
2. Tachypnea
