PE EXAN STUDTY Flashcards
What is the respiratory system responsible for?
exchanges of gas between the body and environment
What is oxygen necessary for?
the body’s cells production of energy
What does respiration involve?
inhalation and exhalation
What is increased ventilation?
the amount of air that is inspired and expired in 1 minute.
What is increased tidal volume?
the amount of air breathed in and out in one breath
what is increased respiratory rate?
the number of breaths per minute
What demand does exercise create?
greater demand for oxygen in the body
Why does the body need more oxygen?
In order to create energy for the muscles and remove waste products
How long does the exercise demands/changes last?
during the activity and a short period period after (recovery)
What is another name for the conducting system?
respiratory tract
What is the conducting system?
a series of organs and structures that transport air from outside into the lungs
What is the conducting responsible for?
filtering, warming and moistening the air
What role does the mouth and nose play in the respiratory system?
entry points for air
nose - filters and humidifies air
mouth - backup entry
What is the pharynx?
a muscular tube that connects the nasal and oral cavities to the larynx
Where is the larynx?
a cartilage structure located at the top of the trachea
What is the trachea?
a tube made of cartilage rings that connects the larynx to the bronchi
What is the bronchi?
two tubes that branch off from the trachea and enter the lungs
What are the bronchioles?
small branching tubes that lead to the alveoli
What is the alveoli?
tiny grape-like sacs at the end of bronchioles
What is the alveoli’s role in the respiratory system?
site where oxygen is diffused in the blood stream and takes carbon dioxide to the lungs to be exhaled out
What is the pathway of air in the body?
NPLTBBA
Nose and Mouth, Pharynx, Larynx, Trachea, Bronchi, Bronchioles and Alveoli
What number is the Nose and Mouth in the order?
1
What number is the Pharynx in the order?
2
What number is the Larynx in the order?
3
What number is the Trachea in the order?
4
What number is the Bronchi in the order?
5
What number is the Bronchioles in the order?
6
What number is the Alveoli in the order?
7
What is the pleura?
a double layered membrane that is attached to the lungs the lungs and lines the chest cavity
What are the two pleura layers called?
inner layer and outer layer
What is the inner layer attached to?
lungs
What is the outer layer attached to?
chest wall
What is in between the two pleura layers?
pleural cavity
what is inside pleural cavity?
small amount of fluid that helps the lungs move smoothly against the chest wall during breathing
What is the diaphragm?
a dome shaped muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity
What is another name for inhalation?
inspiration
what is another name for exhalation?
expiration
What controls the breathing process?
respiratory system in the brainstem
