Explain each of the eight physical literacy curriculum teaching models discussed in class and some benefits of each.

A

Skill Theme Approach- At the most basic or fundamental level, this approach develops fundamental movement skills such as locomotor- running, jumping, back pedal, change of direction, side shuffle, etc., and non-locomotor/manipulative skills such as throwing, kicking, catching, batting, etc. (Cognitive, Psychomotor, and Affective domains.)
Personal and Social Responsibility- Students are given the opportunity to learn social responsibility skills, that can be used in any setting, by becoming group or team leaders, group or team members, and specific role players to improve the functioning of their team or group in a physical activity setting. (Affective, Cognitive, and Psychomotor domains.)
Tactical Games- Students game plan, strategize, and employ specific skills to improve game performance and skill execution to enhance interest, enjoyment and excitement about sports related games. (Psychomotor, Cognitive, and Affective Domains)
Sports Education- Students will develop sports literacy through participating in various team, duel, and individual sports as players, leaders, coaches, officials, and game managers. (Psychomotor, Affective, and Cognitive Domains)
Fitness Education- Students will understand the approaches and methods of incorporating the knowledge and skills of fitness to participate in, and reap the benefits of being physically active for their life span. This would include an understanding of the benefits of exercise beyond the physical, components of fitness, and knowledge of the basic, relevant, principals of exercise science, (Psychomotor, Cognitive, and Affective)
Adventure Education- Involves students in activities that promote holistic student involvement (incorporating physical, cognitive, social, emotional, decision-making, and affective learning) in games and tasks that require trust, teamwork, cooperation, communication, and leadership in a challenging environment. Team obstacle courses, Outdoor activities such as hiking, orienteering, camping, environmental education, etc. (Affective, Psychomotor, and Cognitive Domains)
Outdoor Education- Adventure education conducted in an outdoor setting.
Cultural Studies- Students develop knowledge to observe, analyze and formulate informed opinions on topics of significance related to physical literacy. Examples might include: Personal responsibility for a healthy lifestyle vs. personal rights to choose. Healthcare and healthcare consumerism issues. Prominent athletes and sports figures as role models. (Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor Domains)

Why is it important, when teaching a complex skill, that you break the skill into parts or sections?

A

Skill breakdown is important because it improves a players ability to make instantaneous decisions that assist in the execution of a skill. Skill breakdown will allow for players to improve their individual strengths, such as a players technique and decision making.
