PD Flashcards
slow movement & a cardinal fx of Pd
bradykinesia
increased mm tone & resistance to passive movement, often described as cogwheel or lead pipe
rigidity
involuntary shaking movements commonly resting
tremor
A neurotransmitter in the brain that plays a vital role in motor control and other functions. Its deficiency is a hallmark of Parkinson’s disease.
dopamine
A group of brain structures involved in motor control, learning, and executive functions. They are significantly affected in Parkinson’s disease.
basal ganglia
abnormal protein deposits that accumulate in the brain cells of individuals with Parkinson’s dx
Lewy Bodies
gold standard medication for Parkinson’s disease, where levodopa is converted to dopamine in the brain, and carbidopa helps prevent breakdown in the periphery
Carbidopa/Levodopa:
period when Parkinson’s disease medication is effective, and motor symptoms are relatively well-controlled.
“on” state
period when Parkinson’s disease medication is not effectively controlling symptoms, leading to their return or worsening
“off” state
A surgical procedure involving the implantation of electrodes in specific brain regions to help manage Parkinson’s disease symptoms.
deep brain stimulation (DBS)
A postural abnormality in Parkinson’s disease characterized by a lateral flexion of the trunk.
Pisa Syndrome
A sudden, transient inability to initiate or continue stepping, often described as feeling “stuck” to the ground.
Freezing of Gait (FOG)
An intensive, high-effort exercise program designed specifically for individuals with Parkinson’s disease to improve motor function.
LSVT BIG
Reduced facial expression or facial masking, a common clinical manifestation of Parkinson’s disease.
hypomimia
sudden drop in BP upon standing, can be a sx of PD or as side effect of medications
orthostatic hypotension
hesitation or abrupt stopping during movement
akinesia
decrease amplitude or size of movements
hypokinesia
