Coordination & balance PP Flashcards
balance with handheld, accepts mod challenge; can pick up objects from floor
good balance
steady balance without hands, accepts max challenge
normal balance
Balance with handheld, may need occasional min A, accepts min challenge, can turn head/trunk with balance
fair balance
requires handheld support and mod/max A, unable to accept challenge, unable to maintain balance
absent balance
Vestibuloocular reflex (VOR)
ears and eyes
- allows for head/eye movement through gaze stabilization that encounters head movement; allows stable image during movement (tracking object)
vestibulospinal reflex (VSR)
Stabilizes body while head is moving as well as coordination of trunk (walking and talking)
4 types of coordination
intralimb
interlimb
visual motor
eye-hand
intralimb coordination
movement of 1 limb
- combing hair
interlimb
two or more limbs working
Visual motor coordination
using eyes to accomplish a task
- riding a bike, driving, writing …
eye-hand coordination
movement of head to track an object
- grappling book off a shelf, catching a football, eyes are the guide
Standing and shifting the center of mass forward and backward with distal > proximal activation
ankle strategy
involves flexing and extending the hips
hip srategy
Orientation of body in space, navigate environment, anticipate change
Visual system
Cutaneous sensation: deep/superficial
Somatosensory system
Acceleration/deceleration of head: stones detect orientation of head against gravity
Vestibular system
“protective stepping” - realignment of BOS under the COM by stepping in the direction of instability.
can also be trained through “falls” or LOB
reactive stepping
involves flexing and extending the hips
- proximal > distal mm activation
hip strategies
standing and shifting the center of mass (COM) forward and back.
DISTAL >PROXIMAL activation.
