PCE - 6 Flashcards
what are 6 ways species compete?
1) exploitation - deplete resources
2) pre - emptive - using space
3) overgrowth - depriving other species of light
4) chemical - production of toxins
5) territorial - behaviour or fighting in defence of space
6) encounter - transient interactions directly over a specific resource
what are isocline graphs used for?
graphs that show how the size of each population increases or decreases when we start with different combinations of species abundances and their different carrying capacities
what is the difference between exclusion and coexistence isoclines?
exclusion = isoclines do not cross coexistence = isoclines do cross
what is the effect on population growth on isoclines, above and below them and to the left and right of them?
on the isocline = zero population growth
below and left = positive population growth
above and right = negative population growth
how does carrying capacity affect competing species?
the species with the biggest carrying capacity wins
when do two species co exist?
when intra-specific effects are stronger (K’s INSIDE on isocline graph) than inter-specific effects
what does it mean when the population growth rate = 0
species are coexisting at equilibrium
what creates stable and unstable equilibriums on isocline graphs?
stable = Ks on inside unstable = Ks on outside
describe scramble and contest competition?
scramble = exploitative and consumptive contest = interferene and encounter
