BOHA - 4 Flashcards
eating is a behaviour so there must be a causation what is it?
hormones - leptin = released from fat storage less hunger and ghrelin released from the stomach = more hunger
what is the motivation to mate controlled by in mammals and birds?
balance between hormones, testosterone, oestrogen , progesterone
what is the difference between hunger and sexual motivation?
hunger restores a physiological balance mating does not
how do animals maintain regular behaviours?
biological rhythm of internal clock and concept of zeitgeber
what are biological rhythms called?
Circadian rhythms
how long are biological clocks?
difference length clocks for different things
what are the 4 lengths of rhythms and examples ?
1) very short - heartbeat
2) circadian (24 hour) - sleeping
3) circalunar - (monthly) - menstrual cycle
4) circannual - (yearly) - reproduction
what controls the onset of reproduction in birds?
Pituitary hormones
what was difficult about the discovery of how internal clocks work and what new science has aided in it?
- difficult due to such tiny amount of hormones being released
- The introduction of radio-immunoassay led to a massive increase in precision e.g can use luminescent paint to see which parts of brain release hormone in response to the light
what are 2 benefits and 2 costs of testosterone?
benefits= 1) promotes sperm production 2) activates sexual behaviour Costs= 1) suppresses the immune system 2) stimulate aggressive behaviour
what is zeitgeber and an example of it?
a cue in the regulation of the bodies circadian rhythms e.g sunlight regulates our bodies after jetlag
what are higher levels of testosterone correlated with?
increased extra pair copulation
