PCE - 2 Flashcards
what does a life table work out about reproduction?
number females babies/ reproductive female (per capita)
what is R0
the net reproductive rate - average number of offspring produced per individual (female) over her lifetime (lxmx)
what are the consequences if R0 is less, more and equal to 1?
R0 <1 = population declines
R0 > 1 = population grows
R0 = 1 = stable population
what does R0 mean / could be linked to?
could be linked to a disease e.g the number of people that one sick person will infect (on average)
whats the definition of generation time?
- average time between birth of individuals and birth of their offspring
- the age at which members of a given cohort are expected to reproduce
3 ways population growth can be increased and why this cant all happen at the same time?
1) Increased survival
2) Increased reproduction
3) Decreased generation time
However this cant all happen due to allocation of limited resources
in the red deer study when do they show the highest mortality rate?
in winters following reproductive epidsodes
in an experiment on clutch size what affect did the addition and removal of eggs have?
removing eggs increased the clutch size next year
adding eggs reduced the clutch size next year
in the quanitity versus quality experiment what effect did size of clutch have?
- fewer eggs heavier, healthier young
- more eggs lighter young, less likely to survive
what does X stand for in the life table?
age
what does nx stand for in the life table?
number of individuals at each life stage
what does lx stand for in the life table?
survival to age x
what does sx stand for in the life table?
age specific survival
what does mx stand for in the life table?
number of female babies/ reproductive female
what is the equation for generation time?
the sum of lxmx*x divided by R0
