How do you find your relative position to the airport that you need to be in order to enter pattern?

A

Reciprocal (+ or - 180 degrees) from the entry heading. So if entry heading is 180deg, you need to be 270 deg (west) of the airport.

Q

How do you find out the pattern direction at a nontowered airport?

A

Listen on the CTAF. Look at the segmented circle. Also check foreflight/chart supplement. See the breakdown of each specific runway. If it doesn’t say “RP” you should assume LP.
