Patient evaluation Flashcards
What is WHODAS?
A global measure of disability: A generic assessment instrument for health and disability. A tool to produce standardized disability levels and profiles. Applicable across cultures, in all adult populations
What is the EEG pattern for tonic-clonic seizure?
Interictal epileptiform discharges
What is the EEG pattern for hepatic encephalitis?
Triphasic waves
What is the EEG pattern of general toxic encephalitis (e.g. electrolyte imbalance)?
A diffuse slowing of background rhythms
What is the EEG pattern of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease?
~90% of patients will have generalized periodic sharp waves
What is the EEG pattern of opioid intoxication?
Decreased alpha activity and increased voltage of theta and delta waves
What is the EEG pattern of marijuana intoxication?
Increased alpha activity in the frontal area of the brain, with overall slowed alpha activity in the rest of the brain.
What is the EEG pattern of caffeine withdrawal?
Increased amplitude or voltage of the theta activity
What is the EEG pattern of nicotine withdrawal?
Marked decrease in alpha activity
What is the EEG pattern of barbiturate withdrawal?
Generalized paroxysmal activity and spike discharges.
What chemical is often tested for in the CSF, blood, or urine to assess dopamine activity in the CNS?
Homovanillic acid (primary metabolite of dopamine).
What blood test may be useful for distinguishing a tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure from a non-epileptic seizure?
Serum prolactin level - tonic-clonic seizures are followed by a sharp rise in serum prolactin that lasts ~20 minutes. Prolactin levels do not change in non-epileptic seizures
