Patient Assesment Study Guide Exam 2 Part 2 Flashcards
Landmarks for elbow joint
Medial and lateral epicondyles of humerus
Olecranon process of the ulna
Cranial nerve 1 test
Smell and patency
*one at a time with eyes closed
Cranial nerve 2 test
-Snellen chart vision test
-test peripheral vision
Normal finding: 20/20
Cranial nerve 3
Can move eyes all directions except directly sideways out, and towards the nose
-superior rectus
-inferior oblique
-medial rectus
-inferior rectus
Normal finding: eyes parallel without nystagmus
Cranial nerve 4
Check the superior oblique, l
Normal finding is eyes parallel without nystagmus
Cranial nerve 5
Sensory: test test tactile and pain sensation in all three branches: ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular.
Sharp and dull sensation with closed.
Motor: palpate masseter and temporal muscles as client bites down, palpate jaw resistance.
Corneal reflex not routinely tested
Normal finding: sensory perception aprop for all three branches bilaterally. Equal, strong contraction of masseter and temporal muscles bilaterally
Cranial nerve 6
Check lateral rectus muscle
<— (O) . (O) —>
N= eyes parallel with no nystagmus
Cranial nerve 7
Sensory: apply sugar or salt to ant 2/3 of tongue. Observe for taste
Motor: facial movements: wrinkle forehead, raise eyebrows, smile, puff cheecks, show teeth, whistle
Observe for symmetry, and note if there is tremor
Cranial nerve 8
Hearing test same as heent
Cranial nerve 9
Swallow, gag reflex
N= uvula rises symmetrically, midline, gag reflex intact
What is the name of Cranial nerve 10
The vagus nerve
Watch uvula as patient says “ahhhhh”
N=??
Cranial nerve 11
Sternocleidomastoid: turn head side to side against resistance
Trapezius: shrug shoulders against resistance
Cranial nerve 12
Tongue movement: observe for deviation, extension
Have client touch their tongue to their nose
Speech: Observe speech
What are the six muscles that control the eye?
Starting from 10oClock on right eye
Inferior oblique
Superior rectus
Lateral rectus
Inferior rectus
Superior oblique
Medial rectus
Pneumonic to remember cranial nerves and eye connection
