pathology of the stomach Flashcards
What is targeted in autoimmune gastritis
partial cells and intrinsic factor
autoimmune gastritis causes what in the stomach
Loss of acid secreting cells
Loss of B12 absorption (anaemia)
What bacteria causes bacterial gastritis
helicobacter pylori
Where does h.b pylori live in the stomach
in the mucus, by the epithelial cells
What effect does h.b pylori have on the stomach
increase acid production but generating small amounts of alkaline solution which triggers an reflex response
Causes of chemical gastritis
drugs (NSAID)
Alcohol
Bile reflux
What causes peptic ulceration
imbalance between acid secretion and mucosal barrier
basically acid in contact with epithelium
Where in the body is affected by peptic ulcers
oesophagus
stomach
duodenum
Complications of peptic ulcer
Bleeding (acute= haemorrhage or chronic=anaemia)
perforation= peritonitis
Fibrosis = obstruction (lower oesophagus, antrum of stomach, First 2 parts of duodenum)
What type of cancer is stomach cancer
adenocarcinoma
gastric cancer can be associated with what
previous H. pylori infection
Where does gastric cancer spread
locally
local lymph nodes
liver via portal system
spread through peritoneal cavity
