Pathology of resp system Flashcards
Anatomy of respiratory sys
- nasal, larynx, trachea, lungs
Epithelia of resp sys
-ciliated epithelium to move particles & clear out lungs
Metaplasia common
Pneumonocytes
Cells lining resp tract
Type I: flat, thin lining alveoli. Allows for gas exchange
Type II: cuboidal; at terminal bronchi. Enzymatic function and source of new type I pnemocytes
Pluck
tongue, larynx, trachea, heart, lungs
Artifacts of resp sys
Many!!
-Colour changes- melanation
-palpation necessary. most common texture change is that they become firm/heavy
Euthanasia solution affecting respiratory system
results in solution precipitating out and appearing as a granular substance on the lungs, pericardium, ventricle
Thickened Pleura
- many animal species (especially cattle), it’ll be thicker at dorsal caudal portion of the lungs
Congestion
**appears darker, heavy, wet (compared with pink and light)
-blood being trapped in an area
OR
-animal laying on side causing blood to pool
Cranio-ventral colour change= hyperemia
-increased in oxygenated blood
Edema
Will see foam in trachea or widened interlobular septa
**there is often foam at bifurcation but that is normal
Hemorrhage in lungs
-difficult to identify in an image because colour change happens frequently post mortem
-If actually hemorrhage, will feel firmer
Thrombosis/embolism
Seen in vessels.
Thrombus on venous side will end up in the lungs as embolism
Mucous production in airways
Goblet cells over produce mucous resulting in blockage
Pulmonary/pleural ossification
-bone formation on surface of lungs
-common in older dogs
-no significance
Anthracosis
Dust contained within macrophages causing small little black spots on lungs
