Cardiovascular tumours Flashcards
Hermangiosarcoma
-dogs, typically spleen and heart (right atrium)
-can cause cardiomegaly, hemopericardium, cardiac tamponade
-dark red colour
-metastasizes to lungs, brain, kidneys, liver
Hermangiosarcoma
Hermangioma
-benign tumour of endothelial cells
-dogs, cats, horses, sheep, pigs
-most commonly in skin
-blood filled masses
Rhabdomyoma and Rhabdomyosarcoma
-rare neoplasia of domestic animals
-sometimes congenital
-white mass in heart muscle
Chemodectomas
Tumours of extra cardiac tissues arising from chemoreceptors (aortic and carotid bodies)
-rare, often benign
-Aortic body: firm white masses near base of heart
-Carotid body: firm white masses near bifurcation
Can cause heart failure due to compression of right atrium, vena cava, and great arteries
Myxoma and myxosarcoma
-rare in domestic animals, most common in dogs
-most common in humans
-tumours of endocardium of chambers or valves; forming from undifferentiated vasoformative cells
**impairs blood flow in chambers=heart failure
**can fragment=forming emboli that heads to lungs
Myxosarcoma/myxoma
-soft, gelatinous, pedunculated, multilobular neoplasm of heart chambers/valves
Lymphoma
-most common secondary tumour of heart
-multifocal disseminated white nodules
-malignant cells infiltrated myocardium in histo!
Lymphoma
