Pathology-98 Slides Flashcards
What is an agent?
An initial stimulus to expression of disease eg viruses, fungi, bacteria
Define Pathogenesis?
The sequence of events in response to etiology
Morphological and molecular changes?
Structural alterations at macroscopic, macroscopic, and molecular level
When there is pathology name cellular adaptations to maintain homeostasis?
Hypertrophy
Hyperplasia
Atrophy
Metaplasia
What occurs to the cell when the limits of cellular adaptation has been exceeded?
Deprivation of essential nutrients
Genetic mutations
Injurious agents/stress
Name the two types of cell injury?
- Reversible-mild cellular injury, which can be reversed and normal cell functions restored ( features characterized by : reduced energy levels and cell swelling).
- Irreversible- permanent cell damage which is characterized by apoptosis and necrosis
What are the causes of cell injury?
- Hypoxia ( ischemia, blood loss,anemia)
- Physical agents (heat,cold,trauma,radiation)
- Chemical agents (drugs, acids)
- Infections
Cell injury leads to?
Aging
Nutritional imbalance
Genetic disease
Immunological reaction (external agents-anaphylaxis & endogenous agents autoimmunity)
Cell injury continues: what are oxygen derived free radicals (ROS’s)?
Unstable partially reduced molecules with unpaired electrons on their most outer orbitals, making them form chemical bonds.
When are ROS produced ?
Chemical &radiation Injury
Cellular aging
Phagocytes activity-microbial killing
Ischemia re-perfusion Injury
Give examples of ROS?
Superoxide anion
hydrogen peroxide
what does ROS affect?
Lipids
Proteins
Nuclei acids
How to prevent ROS?
Balanced diet
