Pathologies Of Practical Exam 200 Flashcards
Definition of Multiple Sclerosis
Chronic disease affecting the central nervous system
Immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body.
Signs and Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis
Very widely and depend on the amount of nerve damage in which nerves are affected
Some with severe multiple sclerosis may lose the ability to walk independently or at all while others may experience long periods of remission without any new symptoms
Is there a cure for multiple sclerosis?
No, however treatments can help speed recovery from attacks, modify the course of the disease and manage symptoms
What questions do you ask a client with multiple sclerosis?
-Is your multiple sclerosis in remission?
-do you have any difficulty walking today?
-do you need any help getting on/off the table?
-What makes your symptoms better or worse?
-Current medication’s?
Contraindications of multiple sclerosis
Acute relapse stage, high pain levels
Accommodations of multiple sclerosis
Avoid application of heat/cold (turn off table warmer)
Slow light massage, avoiding deep work. Deeper faster massage may stimulate muscle spasm
Definition of diabetes
Chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. Body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use the insulin as well as it should.
Too much blood sugar in your blood stream overtime can cause serious health problems such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.
Diabetes affects what system?
Endocrine system
What to ask a client with diabetes
-do you feel lightheaded or dizzy?
-when was the last time you ate?
-do you have sugar tablets with you?
-do you use insulin or oral anti-glycemics?
-when was your last insulin?
-do you have any numbness/tingling in your feet?
Contraindications of diabetes
Avoid massaging insulin injection sites or near diabetic ulcers
Accommodations for diabetes
Avoid deep work on feet and legs if peripheral neuropathy is an issue
Have sugar tabs or orange juice available in your office
Definition of adhesive capsulitis
Condition characterized by stiffness and pain in your shoulder joint
Signs and symptoms of adhesive capsulitis
Typically begin gradually, worsen overtime and then resolve usually within one to three years
Questions to ask someone with adhesive capsulitis
-Have you had a Cortizone shot or surgical repair? When?
-Has the pain stabilized or is it still getting progressively worse?
Accommodations of adhesive capsulitis
Avoid massage in the early “freezing” stage. Avoid techniques or ROM that increased pain. Treat the SITS muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis). Do careful specific shoulder girdle work as tolerated.
Contraindications of adhesive capsulitis
Freezing stage, no massage till two weeks after Cortizone injection or surgery
