Chapter 17 Beck Test Flashcards
Involves reviewing any information available at the onset of the process to understand the present conditions
Assessment
Information gained from the assessment is used to set treatment, goals, determine strategies and select therapeutic techniques to address specific conditions found during the assessment
Planning stage
The application of selected techniques
Performance stage
Examines outcome of the session regarding the effectiveness of the selective procedure for the condition
Evaluation stage
First step of client intake
Setting the appointment.
May include screening to determine the primary reason for the client visit and whether the practitioner services match the client needs
Third step of client intake
Assessment
Consist of client, interview health, history, observation, palpation, and special tests, such as range of motion
What must a client sign for you to share any personal information with other healthcare professionals?
A separate “release of medical information” form
How does a therapist or other observer receive objective information?
Through observation, palpation, and specialized test in which the findings are quantifiable and usually measurable
Postural distortion can result from a wide range of influences, including
Physical or emotional trauma, poor work habits, pathologic conditions, or age
Posture is best observed from all __ sides when the client is standing comfortably erect
Four
The action of a joint through the entire extent of its movement
Range of motion (ROM)
Tissues that are not contractile such as bone, ligament, bursa, blood vessels, nerves, nerve, coverings, and cartilage
Inert tissues
Refers to the proportional limitation of any joint that is controlled by muscular contractions
Capsular pattern
Bone-against-bone feeling
An abrupt painless limitation to further movement that happens at the normal end of range of motion, such as knee or elbow extension
Hard end feel
Sudden stop to passive movement that is often accompanied by pain. Indicates in acute or subacute arthritis, the presence of a severe lesion or fracture.
Muscle spasm
Seen or felt as a rebound, indicating the presence of an internal derangement such as a torn meniscus
Springy block
Pliable and easily movable range of tissue
Freely flexible ROM
End of range approaches, will notice light resistance as the slack is taken out of the tissues and they begin to stretch
Resistive barrier
Stretch continues toward end of movement. More force is necessary until the tissues are stretched and the client feels like “that is about as far as it goes. “
Physiological barrier
Important part of layer palpation; gives information about the extensibility of the subcutaneous connective tissue
Skin rolling
These are normal qualities when doing what?
1. Moderate movement of the skin and subcutaneous tissue over the muscle tissue in all directions
2. An even, smooth grain when moving across the muscle fibers.
3. Soft, yielding, painless, firmness, when pressing into the muscle.
When palpating over a muscle
Natural process of healing and repair when soft tissue is injured
Inflammatory response
The assessment and planning stages of the therapeutic process provide
A blueprint for the procedures performed during the actual therapeutic massage
These are intentions of what?
Reducing pain, restoring circulation, oxygenating tissue, release trigger points (fascial restrictions, and adhesions), improving functional ROM, integrating the restored area back into the whole ultimately increasing quality of life
Soft tissue intervention
Three steps to rehabilitative process
- Restore circulation and neuromuscular response to the tissues
- Release any trigger points and fossil restrictions in the muscle tissues and restore flexibility
- Rebuild the muscle strength and endurance.
Seem tight, results in a postural deviation or constricted joint movement or both
Hypertonic and hypotonic muscles
Varies greatly depending on type of bodywork, technique, condition of client and condition of target tissue
Pressure
Is duration a factor of depth
No
Effective techniques for this are passive positioning, myofascial, and Muscle Energy Technique (MET)
Trigger points and fibrosis
Important because the client and therapist can gauge the effectiveness of the selected course of therapy according to the success of attaining the goals
Evaluation
