Who created natural rights?
John Locke- life, liberty, and property
What is social contract?
People sacrifice money and freedoms to make sure natural rights are protected. If they fail, then the people can completely take down the government.
Who created separation of powers?
Montesquieu- legislative, judicial and executive branches.
How did separation of powers influence the constitution?
This was the foundation of our government
How were natural rights used in the Declaration?
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and all men are created equal is used.
Why was the Magna Carta created?
Made in 1215. Gave certain rights to nobles and limited the kings power.
What were some important ideas from the Magna Carta?
Limited Government: power must be limited by a constitution or written agreement.
Rule of law: all people must follow the laws
Due Process: all people have the right to reasonable laws. Everyone must be treated the same way.
Rights: things people should be able to do without restrictions.
Why was the English Bill of Rights created?
To limit the power of the king and expand parliament’s and the citizens rights.
What were some important subjects from the EBOR that were used?
Limited government, rights, due process, rule of law, free elections, the right to bear arms, petition. No excessive bails, fines or punishments.
Why was the Mayflower Compact created?
The colonists needed governance so they agreed to create laws and government for the good of their colony.
What were some important subjects from the Mayflower compact?
Self Government: people can make decisions on how government should work.
Rule of law.
Why was Common Sense written?
To convince the colonists to split apart from Great Britain.
How did Common Sense influence our founders?
They decided to declare independence and it reaffirmed the ideas of self- government, natural rights, equality, and rule of law.
What were some acts that frustrated the colonists?
Quartering Act Stamp Act Townsend Act Tea Act Intolerable Acts
How did the colonists respond to the acts?
They protested, boycotted British goods, petitioned, and became destructive at times.
