What is a resident alien? How is it different from an immigrant?
RA- has legal permission to live in the US.
Immigrant- has moved to another country. May have legal status.
What is the difference in Law of Blood and Law of Soil?
LOB: Anyone who has at least one parent who is a US citizen is a citizen.
LOS: If you are born on US soil, (or territory/military base) then you are a citizen.
What is the Selective service system?
All 18-26 years old males must register with the selective service in case of an emergency military draft.
How does the 14th amendment define citizenship?
Anyone who is born or naturalized in the US is a citizen.
What is the difference between an obligation and responsibility?
An obligation is something you have to do: school, pay taxes, jury duty. A responsibility is something you are supposed to do. They contribute to the common good.
What are the main obligations of a US citizen?

- 18 years old
- permanent resident of the US for 5 years
- can read, speak and write English
- have a good moral character
- pass a US history and civics exam
Why is it important for naturalized citizens to go through the legal process?
- gives a sense of achievement to new US citizens
- gives a deeper understanding of what it is to be a US citizen.

- it is important to know the people coming to the US and their intentions of what they will do here.
